Nelson Residence
Minneapolis, MN
Removing an outdated wood deck provided the opportunity to recreate the
landscape of this Mediterranean-inspired home as an extension of the architecture of the house.
A series of brick courts were designed to create multiple sitting areas defined by structured
plantings and complement the terra cotta roof of the house. Limestone walls create raised planters
integrated into a generous staircase from the house to the gardens. One of the brick courts breaks
off the main patio and slips into the garden at the back of the yard where a wooden arbor with
trellises provides a secluded respite. The details of the arbor repeat the architectural
ornamentation found on the home.
