Ground One Welcomes Tom Kerby, Landscape Architect
We are thrilled to welcome Tom Kerby, Landscape Architect, to the Ground One team! Tom brings more than 25 years of experience in landscape architecture and landscape design-build. Now with two landscape architects on staff, along with a seasoned landscape designer, we are ready to help even more clients love their outdoor living. We asked Tom a few questions about his move to Ground One, his design process, and how he fuels his creativity. Here’s what he had to say…
What drew you to Ground One?
Tom Kerby: I have been following Ground One through social media for the past 7 years and have always been impressed with the level of design and detail of craftsmanship within each project. Honestly, it was one of just a few design-build companies that I wanted to team up with if the opportunity arose. I am excited to join a team that offers such a high level of work and service to its clients.
What do you love about landscape architecture?
Tom Kerby: Landscape architecture and design intrigues me because it encompasses synthesizing many aspects beyond just design. To be a good designer one must have a good understanding of horticulture, drainage, construction and the underlying concepts behind making enjoyable spaces. Broader aspects of biology, geology and psychology are also foundations of a landscape architect’s efforts. Add the subjective quality of landscape architecture as an art form, and the practice is even more intriguing. Juggling all these disciplines and concepts into each opportunity I have with a client, and working through to a final project, is very satisfying.
Which project in your portfolio best captures your approach to design?
Tom Kerby: A past project (prior to Ground One) that captures my approach to design would be the Golden Valley Contemporary that won the MNLA Judges Choice Award in 2015. It was a project that was a wonderful collaboration between client and designer, and we collaborated from afar via skype while the client was overseas. My approach starts with listening, and then moves into developing the vision for their landscape. The trust that builds from good communication and listening allows for better design and, most importantly, happier clients. I find it is critical to maintain clear and open communication as part of the collaborative process, from initial concept design, to discussion of possibilities, to the final project’s construction.
How do you fuel your creativity?
Tom Kerby: I fuel my creative thinking by continuing my education and engaging in community. It is important as a landscape architect to be informed on new materials, current processes and standards for design. Client safety and well-being is the foundation of our efforts. Engaging in community means I work to connect to other designers/artists, gardeners, builders, contractors and industry professionals to maintain and broaden my understanding and expand my vision as a designer.
Last question: what’s your favorite way to spend a Saturday?
Tom Kerby: For me, the best way to spend a Saturday is to start if off with a pot of coffee on my front porch reading the morning paper with my two dogs. The day would be spent working in my garden, and maybe harvesting a few items for dinner that night.
Please help us welcome Tom to Ground One. Feel free to leave a comment or send Tom a hello!
