What are the Top Summer Landscaping Tips?

In Minnesota, summer is generally the season where our landscapes are looking their best. Trees and bushes are flowering, lawns are healthy and dense, and the warm weather makes it all the more enjoyable to spend time in your own backyards. However, some outdoor maintenance is required to keep your landscape in great shape. If you want to make the most out of your summer landscaping, check out these tips:

  • Keep up with your lawn care. Your grass needs to be watered at least 1.5″ per week and mowed on a regular basis to stay beautifully green during the summer. If you’ve been taking good care of your lawn and it’s still not doing great, you may need to aerate or fertilize to give your grass some extra help.
  • Lay down fresh mulch in your gardens. Mulch retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds organic matter to your garden soil as it decomposes. During winter and spring in the Twin Cities, a lot of mulch tends to be lost to snowmelt and heavy rain, which is why it’s best to add fresh mulch come summer.
  • Plant some beautiful annuals in your gardens. While they can’t survive Minnesota winters, many species of flowers flourish in summer, and can add amazing curb appeal to your landscape. For beauty that lasts, consider planting a few perennials, like hostas and spireas, as well.
  • Work on hardscaping projects while the weather is warm and the soil is loose. Create pathways or patios from natural stone or pavers to make it easier to sit and walk around on your landscape. For a further upgrade, consider installing a fire pit or a pergola, too.
